The FTW Transcriber plays a huge range of file types, including, in alphabetical order: 3gpp, aac, ac3, ape, dat, dss, ds2, dts, flac, flv, hdmov, it, m2ts, mkv, mkv, mo3, mod, mov, mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpg, mtm, nuv, ogg, ogm, ps, s3m, ts, tta, umx, vi, vob, vorbis, wav, wma, wmv, wv, xm If you have difficulty playing a particular file type, update your Windows Media Player, and also download the latest version of the FTW Transcriber, and then try again. If you still have difficulty after that, please contact us. When the FTW Transcriber plays dss or ds2 files, it first converts them to wav.
Do I need Windows Media Player? For most file types, yes.
What operating systems does the FTW Transcriber work in? It should work in XP and later. For earlier operating systems, it may work if you first install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0, available here:
Does it work on Apple computers? The FTWT has not been tested on Apple computers.
Which word processors does the FTW Transcriber work with? Virtually all. The keyboard shortcuts and automatic timestamps will insert into virtually any application. If you're using Microsoft Word, Word does not need to be the active window for this to happen. Any other application does need to be the active window - that means it has to be in front of all other applications on your screen, and your cursor has to be flashing within it.
I keep getting this message: "Shockwave player not installed. Run setup.exe again to fix this problem." What can I do? Open Internet Explorer and go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/, then download and install Flash Player. Note that you need to use Internet Explorer, not any other browser.
I can't use the default hotkeys because I need them for functions in my word processor. What can I do? Reset the hotkeys to keys you never use, such as those on the numeric keypad on the right of your keyboard. To reset the hotkeys, simply open the FTW Transcriber and click Settings, then follow instructions.
Which pedals work with the FTW Transcriber? The Infinity USB pedal (i.e. the same pedal which works with Express Scribe) and the Olympus RS-27 and RS-28 pedals. Why isn't the speedup/slowdown control working? Some file types, for example video formats, cannot be sped up or slowed down. You will need to convert them to another format first, such as mp3.
How do I make the FTW Transcriber play remote files? With the FTW Transcriber can play files hosted on remote servers without having to download them first. To do this, open the FTW Transcriber, then click Open, then Open File From Remote, then type or paste a remote link into the box. The link syntax must be exactly correct for playback to succeed. Note that not all servers will support remote file playback. We are unfortunately unable to assist with technical difficulties in this regard as they are dependent on too many factors beyond our control. To test remote file playback, paste this URL directly into the Remote File window: Remote file playback will only work properly if your bandwidth is fast enough.
What is the Opportunity Window? The FTW Transcriber's Opportunity Window unobtrusively displays notifications of opportunities that that relate directly to transcription. These opportunities may be sales-related or commercial in nature; however, it is our policy to display only notifications that we think may be novel to you, for example we will not display notifications of transcription pedals since that is a concept that is already widely known. Notifications update every few weeks. The notifications are designed not to interfere with your transcription work. They change subtly every few minutes and rotate in random order.
