What file types does the FTW Transcriber play?

The FTW Transcriber player plays any file type that Windows Media Player can play, including audio CDs and DVDs. You may need to upgrade to the latest version of Windows Media Player. For information about playing file types in Windows Media Player, see this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992

As a general rule, you can quickly make the FTW Transcriber play a much wider range of file types by installing klcodec, available here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

This is a list of file types that the FTW Transcriber should be able to play easily without plugins:

CDs (cda)
DVDs (ifo)
Moving Pictures Experts Group (mpg, mpeg, m1v, mp2, mp3, mpa, mpe, mpv2, m3u)
Windows Media Audio (wma)
Windows Media Video (wmv, wm)
Audio for Windows (wav)
Windows Media formats (asf, wma, wmv, wm)
Advanced Systems Format (asf)
Windows Media Metafiles (asx, wax, wvx, wpl)
Advanced Stream Redirector (asx)
Windows Media Audio Redirector (wax)
Windows Media Video Redirector (wvx)
Windows Media Redirector (wmx)
Windows Media Player Playlist (wpl)
Microsoft Digital Video Recording (dvr-ms)
Windows Media Download Package (wmd)
Audio Visual Interleave (avi)
MPEG-1 (mpeg, mpg, m1v)
MPEG Audio Layer III (mp3)
MPEG Audio Layer II (mp2, mpa)
M3U (m3u)
Musical Instrument Digital Interface (mid, midi, rmi)
Audio Interchange File Format (aif, aifc, aiff)
Sun Microsystems and NeXT (au, snd)

You can also play dvf, msv, dss, mov, mkv, vob, mp4, flv, ogm, hdmov, ts, m2ts and ogg files if you install additional plug-in software. Details below:

To play dvf and msv files in the FTW Transcriber, install the Sony plugin for WMP, available here:
http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/sonyplugin129.exe

To play dss files in the FTW Transcriber, you need to have Dss Player Pro installed. This is not free software, but is shipped free with many Olympus digital recorders. It is also available here as a paid download.
http://www.sylvansoft.com/Olympus%20DSS%20Player%20Pro%20Transcription%20Software.htm
Alternatively, you can convert your dss files to wav using Olympus transcription software and play the wav file in the FTW Transcriber.

To play mov files in the FTW Transcriber, install QuickTime, available here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
For mov files you may also need to install klcodec, available here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

To play mkv, mp4, flv, ogm, hdmov, ts, m2ts, and ogg files in the FTW Transcriber, install klcodec, available here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

To play a file type not listed above, there are two approaches you can try:

1 - try to convert the file to a type listed above. The authors of the file type may well provide a conversion tool to convert to wav or wma.

2 - try to find a codec that will enable you to play the file in Windows Media Player. It will then work in the FTW Transcriber.

If you are still stuck, please contact us for help.

Do I need Windows Media Player?

For most file types, yes.

What operating systems does the FTW Transcriber work in?

It should work in any version of Windows in which Windows Media Player is installed, but has only been tested on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows NT, and Windows 7. For earlier operating systems, you may be able to use the FTW Transcriber if you first install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

Does it work on Apple computers?

The FTWT has not been tested on Apple computers.

I can't use the default hotkeys because I need them for functions in my word processor. What can I do?

Reset the hotkeys to keys you never use, such as those on the numeric keypad on the right of your keyboard. To reset the hotkeys, simply open the FTW Transcriber and click Settings, then follow instructions.

Which pedals work with the FTW Transcriber?

The Infinity USB pedal (i.e. the same pedal which works with Express Scribe), and the Olympus RS-27 and RS-28 pedals. If you would like the FTW Transcriber to work with another pedal, please contact us.

How do I make the FTW Transcriber play remote files?

With the FTW Transcriber can play files hosted on remote servers without having to download them first. To do this, open the FTW Transcriber, then click Open, then Open File From Remote, then type or paste a remote link into the box. The link syntax must be exactly correct for playback to succeed.

Note that not all servers will support remote file playback. We are unfortunately unable to assist with technical difficulties in this regard as they are dependent on too many factors beyond our control.

To test remote file playback, paste this URL directly into the Remote File window:
http://theftwtranscriber.com/remote_file_test_playback.wav

Remote file playback will only work properly if your bandwidth is fast enough.

What is the Opportunity Window?

The FTW Transcriber's Opportunity Window unobtrusively displays notifications of opportunities that that relate directly to transcription. These opportunities may be sales-related or commercial in nature; however, it is our policy to display only notifications that we think may be novel to you, for example we will not display notifications of transcription pedals since that is a concept that is already widely known.

Notifications update every few weeks.

The notifications are designed not to interfere with your transcription work. They change subtly every few minutes and rotate in random order.

How do I place an ad in the opportunity window?
There are is currently no charge for ads in the opportunity window, but we are very selective about which ads we accept. Please visit
http://www.theftwtranscriber.com/opportunity.html for more information.
